A Brief History of the KKK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What is the history of the KKK? It all starts with the Civil War. On March 21, 1861, Confederate Vice President Alexander Stevens\u00a0declared in his Cornerstone Speech: \u201cOur new government is\u00a0founded upon exactly the opposite idea {of the United States\u2019\u00a0Constitution declaring equality for everyone}; its foundations are\u00a0laid, its corner-stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is\u00a0not equal to the white man; that slavery \u2013 subordination to the\u00a0superior race \u2013 is his natural and normal condition.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

This strong belief \u2013 strong enough to divide an entire country \u2013 did\u00a0not just die when the Confederates surrendered at Appomattox in\u00a01865. Instead, it birthed yet another movement intended to keep\u00a0the white people in a place of superiority: the white-hooded,\u00a0cross-burning, Ku Klux Klan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KKK\u2019s popularity and influence ebb and flow, depending on\u00a0the politics. The Equal Justice Initiative organization in\u00a0Montgomery, Alabama, has done extensive research to determine\u00a0the actual number of lynching murders in America. Between 1877-1950, they have determined the number to be almost 4,100. This\u00a0does not count the many who were killed during the Civil Rights\u00a0movement, when non-white Americans sought the right to vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might recall that “Bloody Sunday” occurred on the Edmund Pettus bridge, which was named after a Klansman. This attack left future Congressman and peaceful CIvil Rights activist John Lewis<\/a> with a skull fracture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the Black Lives Matter movement gained strength, the KKK\u00a0has returned. In June of 2020, a self-identified klansman leader\u00a0drove his pickup through a Black Lives Matter protest\u00a0in Virginia<\/a>. He was charged with three counts of assault, one count\u00a0of destruction of property, and one count of hit and run. He was\u00a0sentenced to almost four years in prison. He was not charged with\u00a0a hate crime after the courts decided there was \u201cnot enough\u00a0evidence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KKK is still only listed as an \u201cextremist domestic\u00a0group,\u201d not a terrorist organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
