Who Are the Central Park Five?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On April 19, 1989, jogger Trisha Meili was brutally attacked and\u00a0left for dead in Central Park. Once she was found in the bushes\u00a0in the early morning hours of April 20th, the New York Police\u00a0Department collected a group of five young teenage boys and\u00a0interviewed them, the oldest among them was only sixteen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Each of them were unable to correctly describe the victim or\u00a0the event, and later stated their confessions were provided\u00a0because they were told they could go home if they confessed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were sentenced to prison for between five to thirteen\u00a0years each without any DNA evidence.In 2002, Matias Reyes confessed to the attack on Meili, and\u00a0stated he was the only attacker. DNA from Meili\u2019s rape kit was\u00a0matched to Reyes. The five prisoners who were originally\u00a0convicted for this crime, all now grown men, were officially\u00a0exonerated.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formerly referred to as the \u201cCentral Park Five,\u201d these men now\u00a0refer to themselves as the \u201cExonerated Five\u201d They sued the\u00a0City of New York racial discrimination and emotional distress.\u00a0The city settled the case for $41 million. Korey Wise donated a\u00a0portion of his settlement amount to the University of Colorado\u00a0\u2013 Boulder to create the Korey Wise Innocence Project in\u00a0Colorado. Kevin Richardson partnered with the Innocence\u00a0Project based out of New York. Raymond Santana is a clothing\u00a0designer.\u00a0Yusef Salaam is an author and social justice advocate, who was elected in 2023 to city councilman for\u00a0District 9 of New York. Not much is written about\u00a0Antron McCray, but it is reported that he is living a\u00a0quiet life with his children somewhere in the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
