Yes, during the Civil War, a Black woman became \u201cdoctoress of medicine,\u201d as they called it, earning her degree at the New England Female Medical College.<\/p>\n<p>After the Civil War ended, she spent most of her time tending to the health needs of formerly enslaved people, especially women and children. Aside from breaking the barriers with the specialty of medicine he practiced, he was also the founder of Provident Hospital, the first integrated hospital in the country, in 1891.<\/p>\n<p>After founding Provident Hospital, he continued to advance the practice of medicine by becoming the first Black doctor to perform heart surgery on a patient. As a newer nurse, I worked in the Cardiac ICU of St. Louis Children\u2019s Hospital, where I cared for tiny babies born with congenital heart defects. For many of those babies, one of the procedures they would receive was called the Blalock-Taussig shunt (B-T shunt for short).<\/p>\n<p>But it turns out that it should actually be called the Blalock-<em>Thomas<\/em>-Taussig shunt, because Drs Blalock and Taussig were not the only two who invented the procedure: they had help from one Dr Vivien Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Thomas (awarded with an honorary doctorate by Johns Hopkins University in 1976 and was not actually a medical practitioner) was a laboratory assistant for Dr Blalock. He learned quickly and actually coached several doctors through their surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>For anyone interested in the medical field, or for those who love a Heart Warrior, this book is a must read. I am so glad this incredible man is finally getting the recognition he deserves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/95864\/9781620141564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tiny Stitches: The Life of Medical Pioneer Dr. Vivien Thomas by Gwendolyn Hooks and Colin Bootman<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"contributor-toggle cursor-pointer inline hover:underline text-secondary\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; column_structure=&#8221;2_3,1_3&#8243;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Another book about Vivien Thomas and his groundbreaking and life-saving research. This book tells how his savings for medical school was lost when the banks crashed, but he continued to pursue his dreams, despite experiencing the negative effects of a racist system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/95864\/9781481476669\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">A Doctor At Heart: The Story of Groundbreaking Scientist and Teacher Vivien Thomas by Joan Schoettler, illustrated by Steffi Walthall<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;1_3&#8243;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/theradicalagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/a-doctor-at-heart-300&#215;260.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; alt=&#8221;Black Dr Vivien Thomas holds a white baby.
